Cypress Provincial Park Bird Blitz – Saturday June 7

The Friends of Cypress Provincial Park will be having a Bird Blitz on June 7th, in what will hopefully become an annual event.  Experienced birders will be leading walks/hikes to four key areas in the Park to record bird species and numbers and you are invited to come and join us.

We are planning to lead walks/hikes in the following areas:

1.       Yew Lake/ Old Growth Loop  – 2 km, 20 m elevation gain, max 10 participants

2.        Bowen Lookout, Howe Sound Crest Loop – 4.5 k, 160m elevation gain, max 10

3.        Black Mountain Loop, Cabin Lake – 5.1 km, 360m elevation gain, max 10

4.       Hollyburn cross country ski area – approx. 4 km, 100 m elevation gain, max 10

Groups of three or more experienced birders who want to cover additional areas are welcome to sign up for that as well.

We will be meeting between 8:15 am and 8:30 at the Brown Bag Room of the Black Mountain Lodge (south of the Cypress Creek Lodge) in the downhill ski area where we will be providing maps and wavers to sign. Allow for 20 – 25 minutes to drive from the Upper Levels Highway to the Lodge.

Please note that in June patches of snow and/or ice may still remain in some areas.   Dressing for cooler temperatures (the parking lot is at 900m) and wearing proper footwear is essential. For those interested in going to Black Mountain, Howe Sound Crest Loop or Hollyburn we suggest bringing spikes and/or poles if you have them. Updated trail information and any route alterations will be emailed to registered participants one or two days before the count.

To register, email gailross1@telus.net and indicate which area you would like to walk/hike.

Looking forward to seeing you on June 7th!
